Day 1: What Do I Have to Do to Get to Heaven?

Scripture Reading: Luke 10:25-28

Reflection: At the beginning of the story, we see the “expert in the law” (NIV) ask a question many of us ask all the time: “What do I have to do to get to Heaven?” (sure, he words it differently but that is the point of his question). Jesus doesn’t give the answer we expect, instead he agrees with the man that all he must do is love God and love others. Many of us were raised with a laundry list of things we had to do to “earn” heaven, but the Gospel reminds us that our responsibility is much simpler: learn how to live in love. God takes care of everything else.

Prayer: “Lord, teach me to love. When I read your words and don’t learn to love more deeply, remind me that I have read it wrong.”

Journal Prompt: Write a verse or two that have helped you learn to love others more. What has that verse changed about how you think or act? If you can’t think of a verse, look up “Bible verses about love” and read a few until one stands out, then answer the question above.
